Intervention of the National Council for Radio and Television regarding the tragedy in Ilioupoli and the injury on Survivor

The ESR calls on the media to exercise increased caution in presenting the developments regarding the tragedy in Ilioupoli and the injury of the contestant on Survivor.

A recommendation has been issued to all television and radio news stations, as well as to media service providers, including online platforms, by the National Council for Radio and Television (ESR) concerning the coverage of the Ilioupoli tragedy and the serious accident on Survivor.
The ESR urges the media to show heightened responsibility in presenting these developments, emphasizing that they should not exceed the necessary limit for informing the public.
In its announcement, the ESR reminds the media of the applicable legal framework and requests that the content being broadcast be carefully monitored to avoid exaggeration, dramatization, or violations of human dignity.
The ESR Announcement:
“Announcement for the current tragic events (tragic death and severe injury of minors, and serious injury of a contestant in a reality show).
To all informational television and radio stations and, in general, to the media service providers of the country (including online platforms).
Based on the current legislation and specifically the provisions of Articles 15 para. 2 of the Constitution, 3 para. 1 of Regulation 2/1991 of the ESR, 9 para. 2 of Presidential Decree 77/2003, 3 para. 3 of Law 4173/2013, 6 para. 1 of Presidential Decree 77/2003, 7 of Presidential Decree 77/2003, 5 of Presidential Decree 77/2003, 8 para. 1(a) of Presidential Decree 77/2003, 9 para. 6 of Law 4779/2021, and 14 para. 2 of Presidential Decree 77/2003, we request that, in light of the tragic events currently in the news, you exercise appropriate oversight in presenting these events to avoid exceeding the necessary limit for informing the public and comply with the applicable legislation. Specifically, ensure the following:
a) Respect for the personality of individuals mentioned in broadcasts,
b) Respect for the memory of the deceased,
c) Avoid intrusive interference with personal pain or grief,
d) Avoid causing pain to the relatives of those depicted,
e) Accurate reporting of events with responsibility,
f) Broadcasting of verified and confirmed information, and
g) Avoid dramatizing the presentation of events.”
