The news of his death was confirmed by the Journalists’ Union of the Athens Daily Newspapers (ESIEA) through an official statement.
Nasos Athanasiou was one of the most emblematic, respected, and recognizable figures of Greece’s post-dictatorship media landscape before deciding to serve the public through Parliament.
Who Was Nasos Athanasiou
Born in Athens, Athanasiou studied at the Law School of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens. However, his true passion was journalism. He became one of the leading figures of Greece’s public broadcaster, ERT, where he presented major television news bulletins for many years.
His name became closely associated with some of the most successful and groundbreaking current affairs programs on Greek television, including Kathe Mesimeri (“Every Noon”) and I Ekpompi (“The Program”). He stood out for his insightful, calm, and consistently courteous style, steering clear of sensationalism and inflammatory rhetoric.
At the same time, he left a strong mark on the print press and radio as a political analyst, while also serving the profession as a member of the Board of Directors of ESIEA.
In 2012, Nasos Athanasiou decided to transform his social sensitivity into political action. He joined SYRIZA and was elected Member of Parliament for the Attica constituency for the first time in May 2012.
Voters continued to place their trust in him, re-electing him in every subsequent electoral contest (June 2012, January 2015, September 2015, and July 2019).
During his parliamentary career, he actively participated in key standing committees of the Hellenic Parliament dealing with Justice, Public Administration, and the Media, earning the respect of both his political allies and opponents for his integrity, professionalism, and principled conduct.
