More details have emerged about the tragedy that unfolded in Malia, Crete, where a 42-year-old Dutch tourist lost her life on Wednesday afternoon after falling into the sea from a rented boat she was travelling on with a friend and three minors.
According to neakriti.gr, the 42-year-old woman appears to have jumped into the water in order to save her friend, who had felt unwell while swimming.
The two women had rented a small inflatable speedboat from Hersonissos for a recreational trip. The vessel is one of those that can be rented and operated without a licence.
Three children were also on board. Two of them were under the age of five, while the third was around 15 years old.
A selfless rescue attempt that ended in tragedy
According to information from neakriti.gr, one of the two women had entered the sea for a swim. At some point, she began feeling seriously unwell and started struggling in the water.
Her friend, realising that she was in danger, attempted to rescue her. Instead of throwing her a life jacket or another flotation device, she jumped into the sea herself and tried to reach her.
According to the same sources, the woman who had initially felt unwell eventually managed to survive, but her friend, who had entered the water to help her, lost her life after the strenuous effort to save her.
The tragedy is even more heartbreaking because it unfolded in front of the three children who remained on board the rented speedboat.
The children began shouting for help, and their cries alerted people in the surrounding area, according to the same reports.
Jet skis from nearby water sports businesses rushed to the scene to assist.
The unfortunate tourist was pulled from the water unconscious and taken to shore. Despite the efforts of rescuers and the arrival of an ambulance from Greece’s National Emergency Aid Centre (EKAB), she had already died and could not be revived.
A forensic examination is expected to clarify the exact cause of her death — whether it was drowning or a medical condition.
A preliminary investigation is underway to determine the precise circumstances surrounding the tragedy.
