In recent days, doctors have begun the process of gradually waking up Marios Oikonomou, the 34-year-old former footballer who remains in critical condition in the Intensive Care Unit of the University Hospital of Ioannina. The aim is to remove him from mechanical ventilation and conduct neurological assessments.
According to NEWS 24/7 sources, the initial test results have not been particularly encouraging and leave only limited room for optimism among doctors regarding any immediate improvement in his condition.
These examinations will continue over the next 48 hours—a crucial period for evaluating brain activity—which will ultimately determine whether the patient can survive.
The 34-year-old footballer from Ioannina has been fighting for his life for the past week following a serious road accident on Saturday, May 23, which left him critically injured.
Doctors remain cautiously optimistic and continue to hope for the best.
It is worth noting that Oikonomou retired from professional football in the summer of 2024 while playing for Panetolikos. His career included spells in Greece, Denmark, and Italy.
He made 74 appearances for Bologna, 64 for AEK Athens, 23 for PAS Giannina, 21 for Panetolikos, and 20 for Copenhagen. He also played for SPAL, Bari, and Cagliari.
