Two prison officers have been arrested in connection with the escape of an inmate from Korydallos Prison and are facing charges related to the unlawful release of a prisoner.

The arrests were carried out by the Piraeus Sub-Directorate for Crime Investigation and Detection, according to a statement issued by the General Secretariat for Anti-Crime Policy.

The case triggered an alert on Tuesday morning (June 2), when a 48-year-old inmate, who was near the prison entrance where food supplies were being received, allegedly exploited a security lapse and managed to evade the attention of prison staff before fleeing on foot.

An internal administrative investigation (EDE) is expected to be launched into the incident.

Full statement by the General Secretariat for Anti-Crime Policy

“Search operations have been underway since the morning hours of Tuesday, June 2, to locate a foreign inmate who was employed at the Central Warehouse of Correctional Facilities and managed to escape while carrying out bread transportation duties.

The inmate was serving a sentence for drug-related offenses and had previously been deemed eligible for regular prison leave by the competent council. During the past six months, he was granted three regular leaves, all of which he fully complied with, returning on time to the correctional facility where he was serving the remainder of his sentence.

In connection with the incident, two prison officers were arrested by the Piraeus Sub-Directorate for Crime Investigation and Detection on charges of facilitating the release of a prisoner, while the prescribed disciplinary procedures are also underway.”
