Very high wildfire risk across Greece: Red Code alert for Attica and five regions

Authorities have issued a Red Code alert for several parts of Greece on Sunday, August 9, as the wildfire risk reaches Category 4. Civil Protection urges residents to exercise extreme caution.

Several parts of Greece have been placed under a Red Code alert for Sunday, August 9, as authorities warn of a very high wildfire risk (Category 4).
According to the General Secretariat for Civil Protection, the heightened state of readiness applies to Attica and five other regions, following the latest Daily Wildfire Risk Forecast Map.
Areas under Red Code alert
The areas placed under Red Code status are:
- Attica, including the island of Kythira
- Peloponnese: Corinthia, Argolis, Arcadia and Laconia
- Central Greece: Boeotia, Phthiotis and Evia
- North Aegean: Lesbos, Chios, Samos and Ikaria
- South Aegean: the Cyclades
- Crete
Authorities and emergency services in the affected regions have been placed on heightened alert due to conditions that could favour the outbreak and rapid spread of wildfires.
Civil Protection urges extreme caution
The General Secretariat for Civil Protection has urged residents and visitors to exercise particular caution and avoid any outdoor activities that could accidentally spark a fire.
People are advised not to burn dry grass, branches or other vegetation, while the use of machinery capable of producing sparks — including circular saws and welding equipment — should also be avoided.
Authorities have additionally warned against outdoor barbecues, smoking bees and discarding lit cigarettes.
The public is also reminded that burning agricultural land is prohibited throughout the wildfire season.
Fire Service issues public warning
The Hellenic Fire Service has issued a separate appeal, calling on citizens to remain vigilant and closely follow official wildfire prevention guidance.
Residents are advised to monitor information published through the Fire Service’s official website and social media accounts.
Anyone who spots a wildfire should immediately call the Fire Service on 199.
Authorities are also urging the public to strictly follow instructions issued by emergency services in the event of a wildfire, stressing that compliance with evacuation orders and other safety measures can be crucial for personal safety.
