Closed schools in Greece due to bad weather

Where primary and secondary schools will remain closed due to bad weather.

Several schools in specific municipalities across the country will remain closed today, Tuesday (13 January), due to severe weather conditions and frost.
The first announcement came from Ancient Olympia, where, by decision of the Mayor, schools (kindergartens, primary schools, lower and upper secondary schools) will remain closed today, Tuesday 13 January, in four areas of the municipality—Lala, Divri, Panopoulo and Koumani—due to intense cold, frost and very low temperatures.
The suspension applies to all school units, from kindergartens to upper secondary schools, aiming to protect the health and safety of students and teachers, especially in mountainous and semi-mountainous areas.
In the Municipality of Amphipolis, all primary and secondary schools, as well as municipal childcare centres, will remain closed today by decision of the municipal authority.
The educational process will be carried out remotely, via the Webex platform, in accordance with instructions issued by each school unit.
Parents and students are advised to follow official announcements from municipalities and schools for any further updates.
Schools remaining closed
In the Municipality of Viannos, the following school units will not operate:
- Viannos Gymnasium
- Viannos Lyceum
- Ano Viannos Primary School
- Viannos Kindergarten
- Embaros Primary School
- Embaros Kindergarten
- The Municipal Childcare Centre of Viannos will also remain closed.
All other school units in the municipality will operate normally.
Schools opening later
Municipality of Makrakomi: On Tuesday, 13 January 2026, all school units in the Municipality of Makrakomi will begin operating at 09:00 a.m. due to snowfall and frost affecting the entire municipality.
The decision αφορά primary schools, kindergartens, childcare centres, gymnasiums, lyceums and vocational schools (EPAL).
Municipality of Aristotle (Chalkidiki): Due to prevailing frost, school units in the Municipality of Aristotle will operate as follows today, Tuesday 13 January 2026:
In the communities of Arnaia, Stanos, Palaiochori, Neochori, Varvara, Megali Panagia, Stagira and Stratoni, all school units of all levels and childcare centres will start one hour later than usual.
School bus routes will be adjusted accordingly and will depart from designated pick-up points one hour later.
In all other communities, schools and childcare centres will operate normally.
Municipality of Florina: By decision of Mayor Vasilis Giannakis, on Tuesday 13 January, primary and secondary schools in the Municipality of Florina will begin operating at 9:15 a.m. due to low temperatures. Childcare centres will operate normally.
Municipality of Amyntaio: By decision of Mayor Ioannis Liasis, primary and secondary schools in the Municipality of Amyntaio will start at 9:15 a.m. today, Tuesday 13 January, due to low temperatures and frost. Childcare centres will operate normally.
Municipality of Prespes: Due to low temperatures, on Tuesday 13 January 2025, by decision of Mayor Giorgos Stergiou, classes in all schools in the Municipality of Prespes will start one hour later.
The childcare centre and the Creative Activities Centre (KDAP) will operate normally.
Municipality of Kastoria: Due to low temperatures, today, Tuesday 13 January 2026, by decision of the Mayor of Kastoria, all primary and secondary schools will begin operating at 9:00 a.m.
Nurseries, childcare centres and KDAP will operate normally.
Municipality of Deskati: By decision of the Mayor of Deskati, today, Tuesday 13 January 2026, classes in schools of all levels will begin one hour later, at 9:15 a.m., due to frost.
Municipality of Grevena: By decision of Mayor Kyriakos Tataridis and in view of forecasts by the Hellenic National Meteorological Service (HNMS) for very low temperatures, all primary and secondary schools in the Municipality of Grevena will begin operating one hour later today, Tuesday 13 January 2026.
Municipal nurseries will operate normally.
Municipality of Velventos: Due to low temperatures, all school units in the Municipality of Velventos will begin operating at 9:00 a.m. The childcare centre will operate normally, according to its regular schedule.
Municipality of Servia: By decision of Mayor Christos Eleftheriou, the morning schedule of schools is modified today, Tuesday 13 January 2026. All primary and secondary schools in the Municipality of Servia will begin classes at 9:15 a.m., with a one-hour delay.
Nurseries and childcare centres will operate without any change to their schedule.
Municipality of Polygyros: The Municipality of Polygyros announced that schools of all educational levels in Polygyros, Vrasta, Taxiarchis, and all villages of the Municipal Unit of Zervochoria will open at 9:00 a.m. due to low temperatures.
Municipality of Lemnos: According to Decision No. 12/2026 of the Mayor of Lemnos, due to adverse weather conditions on the island and an increased risk of frost during the early morning hours, all school units in the municipality will operate today, Tuesday 13 January 2026, with a start time of 9:30 a.m.
Parents and guardians will receive further information from school administrations.
Municipality of Karpenisi: Due to low temperatures, primary and secondary schools in Karpenisi will operate from 9:00 a.m., while schools in the local communities of Fournas, Kleitsos (Platanos) and Stenoma will operate from 10:00 a.m.
Childcare centres will operate normally, according to their standard schedule.
Instructions from the Ministry of Education
The Ministry of Education clarifies that when municipalities decide to suspend the operation of schools due to adverse weather conditions, the educational process must continue via distance learning, where this is technically feasible.
Remote teaching is activated immediately in order to ensure the smooth continuation of classes and the proper functioning of the school programme.
