Melpo Zarokosta was born in Piraeus in 1933. She was the daughter of Ilias Zarokostas, one of the first Greek actuaries, and Despina Spyropoulou.
The president of the Greek Actors’ Union (SEI), Spyros Bibilas, wrote in a social media post that he was informed of Melpo Zarokosta’s death by her son.
“Alongside all the struggles of actors, our beloved friend stood by us, leaving her mark through countless wonderful roles in cinema and television,” he commented.
She spent a total of 11 years abroad, beginning her artistic career in theatre and television. In Sydney, and more specifically in the state of New South Wales, she performed demanding roles, such as Jean Anouilh’s Antigone, as well as Hecuba, which she presented in Greek for the Greek diaspora.
In 1957, she married pianist Andreas Diamantidis, and together they moved to London, where they lived for one year. Upon her return to Athens, her artistic career continued dynamically, as she began collaborating with the theatre company of Lambros Konstantaras. There, she met her second husband, actor and director Victor Pagoulatos. Together they had one son, Alexandros.
