AADE: Warning about road tax fraud

The Independent Authority for Public Revenue (AADE) is urging citizens to exercise particular caution, as a new wave of mass-distributed misleading SMS messages has been observed in recent days. These messages appear under the names “MYaade” or “GOV”.

Using the pretext of “unpaid annual vehicle circulation tax,” the messages prompt recipients to click on a link in order to supposedly pay outstanding vehicle taxes.

As noted, this is an attempt at electronic fraud (smishing).

AADE highlights the following:

• AADE does not send SMS messages to citizens, except in specific cases of transactions (e.g. issuance of a “Kleidarithmos” access code), and ALWAYS in RESPONSE TO and EXECUTION OF a relevant request submitted by the citizen.
• AADE does not send links (URLs) in any form of correspondence (email, SMS, etc.).

As stressed, anyone who receives or has already received such a message on their mobile phone, without having previously submitted a relevant request to AADE, is advised to ignore it, not click on any link (URL), and delete it immediately. AADE warns citizens that “under no circumstances should you provide personal data or card details”.
