“Justice for Thodoris” – Mass rally in Argos against police violence

Crowds gathered in the central streets of Argos to protest against police abuse, which cost 20-year-old Thodoris his life. “This was a state killing,” the organisers stressed.

A protest rally was held on Tuesday afternoon (14/07) outside the old Town Hall in Argos over the death of the 20-year-old who was killed by police gunfire.

In their statement about the rally, the Communist Party of Greece (KKE) and the Communist Youth of Greece (KNE) denounced the incident as a state killing, stressing that it revealed “the repulsive face of a state that is hostile to the people” and does not hesitate to use brute force against ordinary working people.

The “People’s Rally” of Argos–Mycenae also responded to the call for the demonstration. In its statement, it said, among other things, that “the remarks made by the Mayor of Argos–Mycenae provoke anger and disgust, as he is effectively attempting to justify the killing of Thodoris and shift responsibility onto his family.

Shooting an unarmed man in the back while he is on foot is not a ‘mistake in handling the situation’, especially when the bullets strike him in the head and cause his death. In reality, this tragic incident is added to the long list of cases of police violence and exposes the reactionary framework of violence and repression used to protect anti-people policies.

This was a killing, and the police officers charged with homicide were rightly remanded in custody.”

The Argolida Anti-Fascist and Anti-Racist Front also called for a protest rally against criminal police abuse in Agios Petros Square.

“Serious questions are raised by the alteration of the crime scene shortly after the news that Thodoris had died, following the appearance this morning of graffiti in an area where access should supposedly have been prohibited until all investigative procedures had been completed.

We will not allow any cover-up! Police abuse will not be tolerated! Exemplary punishment for the police officers responsible! Justice for Thodoris!” the group stressed in its statement.
