More than one tonne of cocaine seized at the port of Piraeus

The Greek Narcotics Division has seized an enormous quantity of cocaine originating from Latin America.

According to public broadcaster ERT, the operation began on Sunday (14/12) and is still ongoing. During the operation, a large quantity of cocaine was discovered on a vessel of Greek interests in the Atlantic Ocean, with the amount so far exceeding one tonne.

The alleged “leader” of the criminal organization is reportedly a well-known figure to the Greek authorities.

According to information available, five arrests have been made in Greece, specifically in Katerini, Thebes, and Athens. Five more individuals were on board the vessel and have also been arrested.

It is noted that, as reported by ERT, the vessel departed from Nea Michaniona in Thessaloniki and sailed to Latin America, where it allegedly loaded a large quantity of drugs intended to be transported to Europe.

For the past two days, the vessel has been towed from the Atlantic Ocean by the French Navy, which is assisting in the operation. In the coming hours, it is expected to be brought to Piraeus, where the drugs will be counted and handed over to the authorities.

Official announcements from the Hellenic Police are expected in the next few hours.
