Taste Atlas “crowned” melomakarona as the best cookie in the world

It may not be a cookie, but it is the best dessert in the world (at least the best Christmas dessert)!

We move away from the kourabiedes vs. melomakarona debate and are led into a new battle—melomakarona versus other… cookies—after the gastronomic guide crowned the Christmas treat as “the best cookie in the world.”
“Although they are believed to have roots in ancient Phoenicia, melomakarona are today a typical Greek Christmas dessert. These delicious semolina cookies are traditionally flavored with honey, orange zest, cinnamon and other spices, olive oil, and cognac,” Taste Atlas writes about the champion of cookies.
We may disagree on the definition of a cookie, but let’s agree that melomakarona deserved a distinction. The Taste Atlas list of the 10 best cookies:
- Melomakarona (Greece): Traditional Christmas cookies with honey, orange, and walnuts, topping the list.
- Makroud el louse (Algeria): Flourless almond cookies made with eggs, sugar, and orange flavoring.
- Alfajores (Argentina): Traditional sandwich cookies filled with dulce de leche.
