Thanos Lampropoulos dies at 70 – The producer who supported Greek documentary filmmaking

Thanos Lampropoulos has died at the age of 70. A significant figure in Greek cinema, the producer made a decisive contribution to the development and support of Greek documentary filmmaking.

Thanos Lampropoulos passed away at the age of 70. The producer, whose name became associated with important documentary films and the promotion of Greek documentary cinema, leaves behind a significant legacy in Greek filmmaking.
Born in Athens in 1956, he studied at the Lykourgos Stavrakos School of Film and Television and at the Law School of the University of Athens, while he also obtained a postgraduate degree in audiovisual production.
In 1988, together with director Stelios Charalambopoulos and cinematographer Giannis Varvarigos, he founded the production company “Periplous”, which focused mainly on documentaries, as well as fiction films, participating in Greek productions and European co-productions.
Indicatively, Thanos Lampropoulos served as producer of the films “Hades” (1996), “Sinasos, Topography of Memory”, “Our Eyes Have Seen Celebrations” (2000), “Logbook: George Seferis” (2001), “Marathon of an Unfinished Spring, Grigoris Lambrakis” (2014), “The Signature” (2013), “The Night Fernando Pessoa Met Constantine Cavafy” (2013), as well as television productions, such as the ERT documentary series “The History of My Years” (2003–2005).
At the same time, he was actively involved in institutional matters concerning the film industry, having served as a member of the General Assembly of the Greek Film Centre, the Thessaloniki Film Festival and the Association of Independent Audiovisual Producers.
His funeral will take place on Tuesday, September 8, at 10 a.m., at the First Cemetery of Athens.
