Unlike France and Spain, where temperatures climbed above 40°C in recent days because of an unusual and prolonged heatwave, Greece continues to experience temperatures that are normal for the season.
And, according to meteorologists’ forecasts, this is expected to continue, with Greece avoiding a heatwave scenario in the near future.
Speaking on Parapolitika radio on Monday morning, July 13, former director of the Hellenic National Meteorological Service, Thodoris Kolydas, gave a categorical response when asked about the course of the weather: “No heatwave.”
He said that temperatures in Athens could reach 38-39°C toward the end of the week and over the weekend. In other major cities, however, temperatures are expected to be clearly lower, at around 36-37°C, while minimum nighttime temperatures will remain relatively low.
Kolydas explained that a heatwave is not defined solely by the maximum temperature, but also by whether temperatures “do not fall at night.” Conditions of more than 40°C during the day and 28-30°C at night must persist for at least three consecutive days — something that, in his assessment, does not appear likely to happen in the immediate future.
