New work stoppage on Saturday on Metro, Electric Railway and Tram

A work stoppage will take place tomorrow, Saturday (29/11), so employees can attend the funeral of their 60-year-old colleague who lost his life at the Electric Railway maintenance base in Piraeus during the early hours of Wednesday (26/11).

The stoppage will run from 10:00 to 14:00.

In their announcement, the Athens Urban Rail Transport workers’ unions also state that the previously declared overnight four-hour work stoppage (01:00–05:00) is suspended due to mourning.

“With respect and sorrow, we stand before our unjustly lost colleague, Nikos Vardas, who passed away while on duty at the Line 1 maintenance base in Piraeus.

We will bid him farewell on Saturday 29/11/2025 at 12:00 in Ano Platano, Akrata. To be able to give him a final tribute, we will hold a work stoppage on Saturday 29/11/2025 from 10:00 to 14:00.

The tragic accident that cost Nikos his life adds to the long list of workplace incidents caused by inadequate safety measures. The significant increase in deaths in our country during working hours highlights the acute problem of workplace safety.

We demand:

• Full investigation of the circumstances of this accident and of the previous one that resulted in the death of Petros Yiamalis.
• Implementation of safety measures and strengthening of inspection mechanisms.
• An end to the systematic neglect of the Line 1 maintenance base in Piraeus.
• Immediate staffing of technical departments with adequately trained personnel.
• Issuance or updating of procedures with strict safety protocols.

Athens Urban Rail Transport’s employees will not accept another sacrifice in their workplace.
