Weather: After the heatwave, African dust will “choke” Greece

After seven consecutive days of intense heat, the heatwave is easing and temperatures of 40°C are now a thing of the past. However, African dust remains in the atmosphere, while weather conditions are expected to shift slightly from Sunday (30/8), with local rainfall and isolated thunderstorms in western mainland areas.

According to ANT1 meteorologist, hot air masses were being carried from Africa, resulting in seven consecutive days of intense heat.

The 40°C temperatures are now behind us and the atmosphere has cooled, but significant concentrations of African dust remain higher up in the atmosphere.

As she adds, the entire country is being affected today, with the exception of the eastern island regions. From tomorrow, the phenomenon will extend further east, also affecting the eastern island areas.

Weather on Sunday (30/8)

Generally clear skies are expected, with temporary cloud cover over mainland areas during the afternoon, bringing local rainfall and isolated thunderstorms, particularly in the western mountainous regions.

Visibility will be locally reduced in western areas during the early morning hours.

Winds in the west will be variable at 3 to 4 Beaufort. In the east, they will blow from northerly directions at 3 to 4 Beaufort, reaching 5 to 6 Beaufort in the Aegean and temporarily up to 7 Beaufort in its southeastern parts.

Temperatures will rise slightly in the east.
